SDCT implementation may be different for different sized farms with varying management styles and resources/infrastructures. However, these tips are useful for all farms: 

• Discuss SDCT with your veterinarian before starting;

• Identify and train the key decision-maker(s) and staff to oversee the protocol or take part in the implementation process; 

• Plan for your dry cow management strategies and conditions (housing, groupings, etc.);

• Confirm your SCC testing schedules

• Have a written “dry off” protocol that includes identification and management for dry off cows (for instance, you can use the National Mastitis Council recommendations)

• Stick to your protocol - enroll all cows in your program that meet enrollment criteria SYSTEMATICALLY (i.e., based on SCC, history of mastitis, or culture results), not randomly or subjectively.
